In the last few weeks I’ve written about gratitude for your body, brain, and 50 things you probably take for granted. I want to round out my ‘grateful series’ with a post expressing gratitude for one specific person in your life.
Think of someone who probably doesn’t know just how thankful you are that they are in your life. This could be a parent, a best friend, a partner, a sibling, a child, or even a mentor.
I invite you today to give them a call and let them know how much you value them. Or write them a letter. Or a blog post. Or both…
Dear Mom,
This last year has been one of the most difficult years of my life. I took a chance on me and started an art business – an adventure that has forced me to get to know myself like I never have before. And the whole time, you were there supporting me in so many ways like you have always done.
We had a lot of great talks this last year. I learned so much about you too. I have come to realize something that I never wanted to admit: I am like my mom.
For most of my life many people have told me “you remind me so much of your mom”, or “you sound just like your mom”.
Sure we have our differences, but in the past the differences were all I wanted to see. So that’s all I was looking for – and saw.
But now I see we struggle with similar things: we want to do everything we can for our children, we both have a desire to give advice (whether solicited or not). We both seem to have an understanding of life and purpose that we didn’t discover until our forties.
If someone said to me now that I reminded them of you, I would say “thank you, I’m trying”.
I will continue to work on being as flexible, accepting, and forgiving as you. You are so open to whatever life and people throw at you – you just take it in stride. You have truly learned that everyone is doing the best they can at every moment, and you accept and forgive all their ‘flaws’.
Your generosity is extraordinary. You do everything in your power to give as much as you can. Willingly. Lovingly.
I will continue to learn as much as possible to help us get and stay healthy. Because I want you around as long as possible. I feel there is still so much I have yet to learn from you.
I am so sorry you never had the chance to know your mom.
So… Thank You, Mom, for being here. And being such an amazing person – someone I want to be more like.
I love you so much,
